Private Property
CPAA works closely with private property owners interested in protecting archaeology on their private lands. In some cases, this involves detailed surveys to inform the landowner what kinds of sites are found there and why they are important. Other times, we provide the landowner with strategies to protect their sites from trespass and looting. And in two instances – in Nine Mile Canyon in eastern Utah and Caanan Gap in southern Utah – we helped the landowners nominate their archaeological sites to the National Register of Historic Places. We are currently working with multiple landowners in Cedar City to document rock art sites that can now be avoided as housing developments continue to spread across the landscape.
